CPI All Items> Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers: All Items:  (CPI-U) A price index of a “basket” of items including food, clothing, shelter, fuels, transportation fares, service fees such as utilities, and sale taxes.  

The rate of inflation is the percentage change in the CPI-U from one period to another. As measured by the month-to-month change or by the current month compared to the same month a year previous, the inflation rate is not often negative. Prices of meat, poultry, eggs and fish are far more variable than prices of most other items that make up the CPI-U.  The prices of these products are affected by weather, production cycles, disease, and other factors.

As shown in the following  chart, the inflation rate in December 2024 was 2.9%, up 2.73% from November, but but significantly below 9% in June 2022.

CPI Food> Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers: Food in U.S. City Average: (CPI-F) is a price index of a basket of food items paid by urban consumers. As shown in the following chart, the CPI-F was 2.47% higher in November 2024 than twelve months earlier but significantly lower than 11.35% in August 2022.
